ED Stainless provides AWS Class ER420 MIG and TIG filler wires and rods for welding martensitic stainless steels that need high hardness and wear resistance. ER420 filler metal is used where strong mechanical strength and good corrosion resistance are critical after post-weld heat treatment. ER420 is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel alloy containing about 12–14% Chromium and 0.15–0.40% Carbon. It offers high tensile strength (~760 MPa) and hardness when heat treated. After proper post-weld heat treatment, the weld metal can reach hardness levels up to 500 HB. It provides moderate corrosion resistance and excellent wear and abrasion resistance. ER420 filler is best applied in settings that require high hardness and strength but may need stress-relief or preheat/postheat treatments to avoid cracking in sensitive welds.
