AWS ER316 and ER316L are made of 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum, with ER316L containing low carbon (≤0.03%) to reduce carbide precipitation. These alloys show tensile strength of ≥75 ksi and yield strength of ≥57 ksi, with elongation of 30% or more. The molybdenum increases pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, while low carbon ensures better weld zone stability. Their balanced mechanical properties provide great toughness and ductility, making them suitable for welded assemblies that must endure harsh or cyclical stress conditions.
