Stainless Steel 420 tubing mostly contains 12–14% chromium and 0.15–0.4% carbon, along with small amounts of manganese, silicon, and nickel. This blend allows it to be heat treated for increased strength and hardness. Typical mechanical properties include a tensile strength of 70–100 ksi, yield strength of about 50–60 ksi, and hardness up to Rockwell C50 when hardened. It has moderate corrosion resistance in dry environments and fresh water. Its martensitic structure provides good ductility in the annealed state and high wear resistance when hardened and tempered. The material is magnetic and is not suitable for welding without preheating and post-weld treatment.
